What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Every aircraft has a transponder, which responds to radar probes by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft in a crowd of screens. Transponders can be found in various modes that vary how they respond to interrogation. Mode A transmits only the code while mode C transmits information about altitude. Mode S transponders offer more specific information, such as call signs and positions that can be helpful in airspace that is congested.

A common sight is a small, beige box beneath a pilot's seat in most aircraft. This is the transponder and it is designed to transmit a SQUAWK code when the airplane is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set in the 'ON' position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.



It's not uncommon to hear pilots being instructed by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is an order for the pilots to press their transponder's IDENT button. The ident button causes the aircraft to blink on the ATC's radar screens, allowing the pilot to easily recognize your aircraft's location on the screen.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts, however there are certain reserved codes that prohibit the use of a particular code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code blocks are set up using statistical analysis to limit the possibility that two aircraft with the same SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at any given time.

A transponder key has an exclusive chip inside that holds the ID code. If the security light in a vehicle is illuminated, it indicates that the ID code of the key does not match the one stored in the computer. When this occurs, the immobilizer of the car will be disabled and it will not start until a different key is used. Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers buy a new transponder key or have them cut by an experienced locksmith.

PIN Codes

A PIN code is a sequence of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to the device or service. For instance, a smart phone, for instance, comes with a PIN that the user must enter each time they use the device. PIN codes are used to safeguard ATM and transactions at POS[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.

While a longer PIN code might appear to be more secure however, there are ways to guess or hack the PIN code as short as four digits. To ensure security it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits long and contain both numbers and letters. VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique for every vehicle on earth with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code are a combination of letters and numbers which can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your vehicle or truck.
